Abstract:

Opera singer Alfreda Burke was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 17, 1961. She graduated from Roosevelt University Chicago Musical College with her B.M. degree in 1984, and her M.M. degree in 1987. In 1995, Burke made her Carnegie and Orchestra Hall debuts in Strauss’ Elektra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Daniel Barenboim. She performed with numerous orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia; the Cincinnati Pops Symphony Orchestra; the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; the Prague Philharmonic; and the Umbria Music Festival. In 2002, Burke and her husband, opera singer Rodrick Dixon, performed in the choir Too Hot to Handel at the Detroit Opera House and Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Burke taught on the faculty of several schools, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Laboratory School and the Wheaton College Conservatory. She also served on the Chicago Olympic 2016 Arts & Culture Advisory Council and the Roosevelt University CCPA Advisory Board.
