Abstract:

Minister Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry was born on August 25, 1935 in Jackson, Mississippi. After completing her A.A. degree, Guidry moved to Los Angeles in 1972. The following year, she answered the call to ministry. In 1977, she was ordained as a minister. Starting her career at the First A.M.E. Church in Indio, California in 1977, Guidry held the distinction of being the first female to be appointed a major metropolitan charge when she was assigned to Walker Temple in Los Angeles in 1989. On July 5, 2004, Tyler Guidry was elected a bishop of the A.M.E. Church, becoming the second woman to hold that title. In addition to her ministry, Tyler Guidry was active in a number of civic organizations. She served as president of Riverside County Board of Mental Health and as the treasurer of the national board of One Church, One Child. She founded the Community Center for Human Development.
