Abstract:

Physician John Clark was born in 1922, in West Virginia. He earned his A.B. degree from Ohio State University; his M.D. degree from Howard University in 1946, where he also completed his residency. He became a faculty member there as the chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in 1957. He held the distinction of training more black physicians in obstetrics and gynecology than anyone else in the world. In 1972, Clark wrote “The Weekly Health Column,” which addressed health issues of women and children. It was published in several African American publications. After retiring in 1996, Clark worked as a consultant at Howard and at the Food and Drug Administration. He received numerous awards, including Howard’s School of Medicine naming a chair in his honor and the Kaiser-Permanente Award for Excellence in Teaching. President William Wlinton praised his service. Clark passed away on September 8, 2008 at age 85.
