Abstract:

Association chief executive and school superintendent Faye Beverly Bryant was born on March 15, 1937, in Houston, Texas. After graduating from Howard University with her B.A. degree in 1957, Bryant returned to Houston to earn her M.A. degree in counseling and guidance from the University of Houston. While at Howard, Bryant was initiated into the Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Howard University. In Houston, she transferred her affiliation to the Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter. Bryant served as Grand Basileus of AKA Sorority, and under her leadership the group focused on programs of service, organizational impact, global women’s issues, economic development and renewal. Bryant also created the Alpha Kappa Alpha Connection, continued construction on AKA Sorority’s national headquarters and added numerous chapters to the African Village Development Program. In 1998, Bryant became the first African American to serve as assistant superintendent for enrichment programs in the Houston Independent School District.
