Abstract:

Lawyer and civic leader Gordon J. Davis was born on August 7, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. He received his B.A. degree from Williams College in 1964, and his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1967. Davis moved to New York City and became special assistant to Mayor John Lindsay until 1973, when he joined the New York City Planning Commission. Davis became the first African American commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the City of New York in 1978. He joined the law firm of Lord, Day & Lord in 1983, as well as the board of directors for the Municipal Art Society of New York. Davis became founding chairman of Jazz at Lincoln Center in 1990, and president of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 2001. That same year, Davis resumed practicing law, becoming partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf in 2007; and Venable, LLP in 2012.
