Abstract:

Civil rights lawyer James Montgomery was born on February 17, 1932 in Louise, Mississippi. In 1949, Montgomery graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Illinois and enrolled in the university's College of Law to earn his J.D. degree in 1956. Montgomery worked in the U.S. Prosecutor's Office in 1958 before going on to found James D. Montgomery and Associates. In 1983, Montgomery was appointed corporation counsel for the City of Chicago under Mayor Harold Washington. He was the first and only African American to hold that position. In 2000, Montgomery became a managing partner in the law firm of Cochran, Cherry, Givens, Smith and Montgomery, working with lawyer Johnnie L. Cochran. Montgomery was honored with the Edward H. Wright Award, Earl Burrus Dickerson Award and National Bar Association's Hall of Fame Award.
