Abstract:

Historian Khalil Gibran Muhammad was born on April 27, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. In 2010, while on faculty as an associate professor of history at Indiana University in Bloomington, Muhammad published his critically-acclaimed work, The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America. His book won the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize from the American Studies Association in 2011. In early 2012, he was selected as director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem where he sought to expand the Center’s outreach and funding. Muhammad left the Schomburg Center in 2016 for a joint appointment as professor of history, race, and public policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School, and as the Suzanne Young Murray Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies.
