Abstract:

Chemist and professor Lloyd Noel Ferguson was born on February 9, 1918, in Oakland, California. He graduated from Oakland Tech High School in 1934, at the age of sixteen. Ferguson earned his B.S. degree with honors in chemistry from University of California, Berkeley in 1940. Ferguson also earned his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from University of California, Berkeley in 1943, making him the first African American to do so. Ferguson joined the faculty of Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1945. During his tenure, Ferguson was instrumental in building the first doctoral program in chemistry at any historically black college or university. In 1965, Ferguson joined the faculty of California State University, Los Angeles, and he co-founded the National Organization for Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers in 1972. He published seven textbooks and wrote over fifty journal articles. He retired from California State University, Los Angeles in 1986. Ferguson passed away on November 30, 2011.
