Abstract:

Lawyer Richard L. Clayter, Jr. was born on July 28, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Englewood High School on Chicago’s south side.  He earned his B.A. degree in sociology at DePaul University; his M.A. degree in social work at Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work, and his J.D. degree at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He is a World War II veteran. In 1958, he represented the Charles S. Jackson Company in its lawsuit against the Oak Wood Cemetery. The company had refused to cremate bodies brought by the Jackson Company. In1959, Clayter won the lawsuit, effectively ending Oak Wood’s racially discriminatory policies. In 2005, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Sole Practitioner Award from the Center for Disability and Elder Law and the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Original Forty Club of Chicago. Clayter passed away on July 22, 2013, three days from his 91st birthday.
