Abstract:

Lawyer Rita Aliese Fry was born on May 28, 1946, in Memphis, Tennessee, but moved to Chicago at a young age. After attending Loyola University in Chicago and earning her B.A. degree in 1971, Fry returned to school, enrolling in Northwestern University Law School and graduating from there in 1979. The following year, she joined the Office of the Cook County Public Defender, and worked there until 1986. For two years, she worked for the City of Chicago as the supervisor of the law department. She later returned to serve as chief executive of the Public Defender's Office, the country's largest such agency. Active as a consultant, Fry was selected to serve on the panel to reevaluate the Illinois death penalty, and was selected by the president of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia to assist in establishing a public defender system. She received numerous awards, including the Phenomenal Women Award and the Sixth Amendment Award.
