Abstract:

Law school dean and radio station founder Ronald Davenport, Sr. was born on May 21, 1936, in Philadelphia. He earned his B. S. degree in economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1958; his LL.B. degree from Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia in 1962; and his LL.M. degree from Yale Law School in 1963. Davenport began his career as a professor at Duquesne School of Law in Philadelphia. He was appointed dean in 1970, the first African-American dean of a predominately white law school. Davenport was also a fellow at the U. S. State Department assigned to review legal systems in Southeast Asia. In 1973, Davenport and his wife, Judith, formed Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation and bought four radio stations. The network eventually included more than 400 affiliates. Davenport was also co-chairman of the American Urban Radio Network. Davenport was active on several national, state and local committees, and received numerous honorary degrees and awards.
