The Honorable Henry L. Marsh, III

Abstract:

Civil rights lawyer, mayor and U.S. senator Henry L. Marsh III was born December 10, 1933 in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating from high school, he earned a B.A. degree in sociology from Virginia Union University in 1956. He obtained his L.L.B. degree from Howard University Law School in 1959. Marsh and Samuel L. Tucker formed the law firm of Tucker & Marsh in 1961. In 1965, they were joined by Oliver Hill, forming Hill, Tucker & Marsh fighting against the resistance Virginia instituted against de-segregation after the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954. After serving since 1966 on the Richmond City Council, Marsh became Richmond’s first African American mayor in 1977. In 1991, Marsh was elected United States senator. He was co-founder of the Richmond Renaissance, past president of the National Black Caucus of Elected Officials and a member of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities.
