Abstract:

Nonprofit executive and labor advocate William Gerald Fletcher, Jr. was born on June 21, 1954, in New York City. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1972. Upon earning his B.A. degree in government from Harvard University in 1976, he spent the next three years working as a welder at a Massachusetts shipbuilding company. His career in the labor movement would include working for Boston Jobs Coalition Greater Boston Legal Services, District-65 United Auto Workers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, the Service Employees International Union the AFL-CIO and the George Meany Center for Labor Studies. In 2002, Fletcher became president and CEO of TransAfrica Forum, .Fletcher authored a number of publications highlighting and chronicling African Americans and the U.S. labor movement.
