Abstract:

Traces the SS's use of the counterfeit British pounds produced in Sachsenhausen, as well as of the booty from occupied Hungary, to prepare for its survival after the fall of Hitler. Among the agents who disseminated and laundered the counterfeit money were Jews, prominent among them Jaac van Harten, who was active in Hungary and northern Italy. Notes that he used some of the funds to free Jews, and after the war he lent money to Aliyah Bet. At the same time, he helped former SS-men escape together with their booty; the routes of SS and Jews often crossed. Later, to rehabilitate himself, he probably exaggerated his part in the rescue of Jews. Also chronicles SS attempts to "sell" Jews to the Allies, including the Becher-Kasztner affair - another survival tactic of the SS leadership.
