Abstract:
Pt. 1 (p. 11-144) describes the evolution and implementation of the mass murder of the Jews by the Nazis. Relates to Germany's prewar anti-Jewish policies, the wartime policy of extermination through the Einsatzgruppen and death camps, and Jewish reactions to the Holocaust. Pt. 2 (p. 145-202), "The Behavior of the Victims: Who Is Competent to Judge This Behavior?", discusses the problem of Jewish passivity during the Holocaust. The rest of the book discusses rescue attempts by the free world and the attitude of the Catholic Church and other Churches during the Holocaust. Contends that although Pius XII remained silent at this time, other Catholic hierarchs took part in the rescue of Jews.
