Abstract:

Until little more than a century ago a hospital was 'a place to die in'. But within a few decades nursing became a trained profession, anaesthetics were brought into general use, and the practice of antiseptic surgery was introduced. The Melbourne Hospital was founded in 1846, in time to see all these changes in turn and, furthermore, to see each as the centre of violent controversy among doctors, in parliament, in the press - and in the city coroner's court. The hospital was established 'for the benefit of the sick poor', partly by charity and partly by government grant. We are inclined to think of hospital finance as a modern problem, but Melbourne's hospitals have always been in a state of 'permanent crisis', and have not caught up with the bed shortage since the gold rushes. The original wards were dark, dirty and foul-smelling" slcohol was so freely prescribed that some citizens regarded the out-patients' department as a free grog-shop; blood-letting was another favourite remedy. Yet from the beginning the hospital had an ideal of community service - an ideal which was realized more nad more completely as it developed into a great modern public hospital, and a teaching and research centre. This is the story of its growth - but not merely of physical growth and the advance of medical science. There is a sense in which compassion also has its history, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital has a noble part in that story. (Inside cover).
