Abstract:

Abstract: Individuals who have a dual diagnosis of schizophrenia and substance abuse have been found to experience exacerbated psychotic symptoms, greater risk of homelessness more frequent hospitalizations, an increased number of suicide attempts, and more negative outcomes overall. There are few programs in Los Angeles County that utilize the Housing First model with homeless individuals who have a dual diagnosis. The purpose of this project was to write a grant to fund a program called Journey Home ACT, intended to provide permanent supportive housing in addition to intensive, individualized treatment of the psychosocial, occupational, and psychiatric challenges faced by adults with schizophrenia and co-occurring substance abuse. The goal of this program is to improve the quality of life for adults with a dual diagnosis. The funding source selected was The Weingart Foundation. The actual submission of the application was not a requirement of this thesis project.
