"The first and second editions of How to Deal With Parents were written for principals. However, parent communication is not the principal's duty alone! Good parent communication is one of the primary responsibilities of teachers. Teachers are often the first impression parents receive of a school, and they are the first to respond to both complaints and praise alike. Unfortunately, parent communication isn't often covered in teacher preparation programs and new teachers are often left floundering through unexpected situations in their first year. In a recent Corwin survey, new teachers reported that parent communication was their second biggest challenge, behind classroom management. In this Teachers' Edition of the all-time bestseller on parent communication, Elaine McEwan answers several questions new teachers often have: How do the difficult parents that teachers are facing in the 21st century differ from their counterparts in prior decades? Do the pressures on today's teachers (e.g. accountability; excessive testing; dealing with social issues;) exacerbate their interactions with angry parents?
