Abstract:
Memoirs of a Jew, born Balbina Synalewicz in 1923 in Pruszków, near Warsaw. After the Nazi occupation she and her family were confined in the Warsaw ghetto. She and her sister, Regina, joined the Dror resistance group, while her parents escaped to Siedlce. Thon was sent by the movement to train on a farm in Czerniaków (Warsaw) and lost contact with her family, who perished in the Holocaust. Thon was then sent to Kraków, where she lived under a false identity; however, a suspicious colleague at work denounced her to the SS. She was arrested and sent to the labor camps of Płaszów, Skarżysko-Kamienna, and Leipzig. When the Russians approached, the Nazis took her on a death march westward, but they abandoned the prisoners after a while. She first returned to Poland but, scared by Polish antisemitism, went back to Germany. In 1955 she emigrated to Argentina.
