Abstract:

The situation of the Jews, shared between different national identities in formation in Central Europe from the end of the eighteenth century to the Second World War, reveals the identi- tity and political issues facing the minorities. The question of national belonging arises for them with a particular acuity, and they appear then as individuals in the course both singular and paradigmatic. The authors highlight through chapters devoted to emblematic personalities the mechanisms of the construction of a personal identity in a complete environment, that it is carried out without the private or public sphere, passing by the voluntary adhesion to a community, be it cultural or political. The stages in the construction of identities appear through biographies that fit into a vast space, from Central Europe (Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Zagreb and Warsaw) to Jersualem and China. The path of Jewish individuality makes it possible to follow the emergence of complex identities, in the context of adoption of other cultures or reaffirmation of a specific Jewish anchorage. At the same time chronological and thematic, the book analyzes the link between writing and identity, traces the maturation of political consciences and highlights the role of Vienna, the great central-European metropolis at the heart of a vast resaue of cultural exchanges . Thus, under a new lighting, appear known and unknown figures of pedagogues, rabbis, histories, men and women of letters: Karl Krause, Max Brod, Elias Carnetti, but also Veza Canettie.
