There is hardly any pictorial evidence for Indian Ocean shipping such as exists to clarify the ship types of the ancient Mediterranean. We have to rely on scattered literary sources of all periods down to later medieval times. To exclude all evidence later than the tenth century, on grounds of an artificial symmetry in this book, would have ruled out much valuable information.
