Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate dietary modifications and patient compliance in the treatment of vertigo in patients with Meniere's disease (MD). Specifically, this retrospective analysis investigated reduced sodium and/or caffeine-free intake. There were 136 participants in this study. Participants were patients at the House Clinic in Los Angeles from 2008 through 2010. Only patients with a diagnosis of MD based on the classical triad of MD symptoms were included. Each participant completed a questionnaire which reviewed symptoms, dietary behavior and compliance. The questionnaire data showed vertigo symptoms, specifically, number of spells and functional level, significantly improved with the implementation of a reduced sodium and/or caffeine-free diet. There were inconsistent findings when evaluating the relationship among symptoms, diet and degree of compliance. Participants demonstrated through the questionnaires a limited understanding of reduced sodium and/or caffeine-free foods which impacted their ability to comply with dietary recommendations. This suggests that improved nutrition education regarding reduced sodium, caffeine-free diets may improve outcomes.
