Abstract:
In this chapter the techniques used to monitor inspired/expired oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide in the critically ill are described. The importance of each parameter in the clinical setting is outlined. Derivation of resting energy expenditure (REE) from measure-ment of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production is also considered.
