Abstract:

The book reveals the fate of an extraordinary person - a Germanist, a theatrologist, and Irena Veisaitė, the long-time chairwoman of the Open Society Fund. The dialogues of a past researcher and a person reflecting on their own experiences open up a life-filled story of one life, spanning four radically different epochs - interwar, the time of the first Soviet and Nazi occupation, the Soviet era, and the restoration and consolidation of Lithuania's independence. The confrontation between history and memory reveals not only the outline of Irena Veisaitė's biography, but also the images of the Jewish world of Lithuania lost in the 20th century, portraits of prominent cultural figures met by the heroine of the book. In addition to interviews the book includes texts, speeches and excerpts of Professor Irena Veisaitė, which complement and deepen, help to reinterpret the live story born during the conversations.
