Abstract:

In 1916 an armed rebellion against a proposed Home Rule policy, wherein Ireland would be a dominion of Britain, inaugurated a period the Irish call "the Troubles". For two and a half years the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Irish volunteers waged guerilla war against the British "Black and Tans". In an effort to quell the rebellions, the Government of Ireland Act of 1920 created two administrative regions in Ireland. Dissatisfied with the solution, members of the IRA assassinated their leader, Michael Collins, who had signed the agreement, and vowed to continue the fight for unification and independence.
