Abstract:

A general history of Spain under the Catholic monarchs. Ch. 6 (pp. 313-372), "L'Espagne inquisitoriale", surveys the persecution of Jews under both Muslim and Christian rule, and counters the stereotype that the Jews were all moneylenders and tax collectors hated by the masses (at least up to the 14th century). Outlines the development of popular antisemitism, ghettoization, and the imposition of the Jewish badge and other restrictions after 1391. Describes the introduction of measures to exclude Conversos from municipal office in Toledo (1449), linked to the concept of "limpieza de sangre." States that use of the Inquisition against Judaizers may well have been an innovation of zealous Conversos. Surveys its activities from 1480 on, and the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. The Inquisition was an instrument used by the state to sustain the aims of a totalitarian unification policy. Includes an appendix: "Sur la pureté de sang et les théories d'Américo Castro" (pp. 427-437).
