The remaining1-2% is composed of cells producing mainly insulin (by beta cells) and glucagon(by alpha cells), hormones that are released into the bloodstream to regulateblood glucose levels. This small part of the pancreas therefore has an endocrinefunction. Those hormone-producing cells are organized in small clusters thatappear as ‘small islands’ (islets) in the ‘sea’ of exocrine tissue (Figure 1), asfirst described by a German pathologist, Paul Langerhans, in 1869 while hewas still a medical student, although at that time he was unaware of theirfunction. When later their crucial role in glucose metabolism was discovered,they became known as islets of Langerhans, in the fields of diabetes andtransplantation (Tx) simply referred to as ‘islets’." ;
schema:exampleOfWork <http://worldcat.org/entity/work/id/3984498089> ;
schema:name "Islet Xenotransplantation: toward a cure for diabetes" ;
schema:productID "6892894465" ;
schema:publication <http://www.worldcat.org/title/-/oclc/#PublicationEvent/erasmus_university_rotterdam2011_06_21> ;
schema:publisher <http://experiment.worldcat.org/entity/work/data/3984498089#Agent/erasmus_university_rotterdam> ; # Erasmus University Rotterdam

schema:url <http://hdl.handle.net/1765/23681> ;
schema:workExample <http://worldcat.org/isbn/978-94-6169-089-0> ;
wdrs:describedby <http://www.worldcat.org/title/-/oclc/6892894465> ;    .
