Abstract:
This thesis sets out to explain and clarify what we call “another Renaissance”, namely the curious images of the above Flemish painters. Our analysis aims to be of an ethno-mythological nature: our two painters put forward important aspects of the popular culture of their time, especially those which have a link with the carnival. In fact, the first important point of our thesis is to affirm the existence of a true carnivalesque religion and our first duty is to show it: we give a new interpretation to the word carnival, starting with the word itself, basing it on etymologies and the most recent linguistic research. We go on to highlight historical, mythological and ethnological arguments, which lead to an assimilation of carnival as a real religion, with chronological dates within the year to be respected, with pagan-Christian characteristics, functioning with its own internal easoning, drawing on cosmology, rites, myths, cult leaders etc. Then we examine the integral parts of this religion within the paintings themselves, comparing them and linking them to old as well as to contemporary but traditional carnivals which respect the key basic structures. We will demonstrate that certain pictorial illustrations show a religious and cultural system that outline the parameters and present the background canvas of this other Renaissance, integrating also other artistic images with the same characteristics as those identified by our research.
