Abstract:

Travel journal, 2 November 1808 - 2 April 1810, of Joseph Dulles' tour of England and Ireland, documenting his voyage from Charleston (S.C.) to London (England) to settle the estate of his brother, William Dulles III (1760-1808), who died soon after his return from India. Entries discuss debates in the House of Commons, social events, food and drink, business transactions, art works seen, lectures attended and tours of gardens, homes, factories and other locations.

Entries discuss an accident at sea; contents of the ship filled with cotton and passengers; delivery of letters for several people including Judge [John F.] Grimke and Dr. [David] Ramsay; describing his social and business activities with comments on "proving the will” of his brother William Dulles (1760-1808), and 1 April 1809: "all this week preparing papers for India.”

Dulles describes a visit to Kew and other botanical gardens; lectures by Irish botanist Dr. [Walter] Wade; a tour of the London home of English physician, abolitionist, philanthropist and Quaker, Dr. John Coakley Lettsom, including his library and his bust of Benjamin Franklin; comments on art and other artists including the paintings of [Thomas Sautelle] Roberts; meeting Benj[amin] West and viewing his paintings, with comments on West’s use of [bifocal] glasses; disapproval of minia[tures]: "shall have to give Mary’s to Mr. Burch" [presumably a reference to his daughter, Mary Dulles Cheves, and the English miniature painter William Russell Birch (1755-1834) of Philadelphia] with other remarks on Mr. Burch and "the picture"; reporting on the 1809 fires that destroyed significant portions of St. James Palace and burned all of The Theatre Royal Drury Lane; descriptions of various public buildings; and his return trip to South Carolina by way of Amelia Island (Florida) due to the blockade by the British Navy (following the Embargo Act of 1807).
