Abstract:

Payne received letters from: Jean-Joseph Jacotot, 15 March 1831, thanking him for his effort in disseminating the principles of his system of universal instruction; Roden Noel, 3 February 1863, about his book [Behind the veil and other poems]; W.B. Hodgson, 23 February 1867, sending six autographs [not included] and commenting on Payne's upcoming paper on Jacotot; Francisque Michel, 22 April 1871, about his book.

From an unidentified correspondent, 13 June 1872, thanking Payne for sending his paper; Charles Kingsley, 4 July 1873 postcard, giving him permission [to use one of his poems] but that he must also get Macmillans' permission; R.H. Horne, 7 May 1874, accepting a dinner invitation; G.O. Trevelyan, n.d., recommending Payne for the professorship of English language and literature at Owen's College.

From J.R. Seeley, 2 June [n.y.], accepting an invitation, and 8 November [n.y.], declining an invitation; Sidney Colvin, 1 May [n.y.], about Payne's dues owed to the New Club; Alfred Parsons, 19 January [n.y.], thanking him for a letter and with congratulations; from an unidentified correspondent, 17 June [n.y.], giving permission to include a song in his collection.

Includes two printed advertisements for Payne's lectures on Jean- Joseph Jacotot's system of universal instruction (January 1833) and evening classes in Greek, Latin, French, or English languages and literature; and a gentleman's ticket with an engraved crest and wax seal.
