Abstract:

Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of a chronological journal of proceedings in the House of Lords, including bills, resolutions, committee appointments, and orders of the house. Although the volume includes such items as the report of John Holles, Earl of Clare, on the distribution of money for relief of the poor in London and Westminster, and petitions of lords' servants who claim they have been unlawfully arrested, the bulk of the volume concerns the accusations by the House of Commons against George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, and his responses to the accusations. The accusations include his failure to guard the seas, his unjust detainment of the ship St. Peter, his extortion of money from the East India Company, and his collaboration with France. The manuscript also contains a list of monetary gifts to the duke, as well as to his brothers and other relatives. Other entries concern John Digby, Earl of Bristol's petition to clear his name of treason and to explain his accusations against the Duke of Buckingham. The manuscript concludes with King Charles I's dissolution of Parliament and a list of acts passed.
