Abstract:

Geoffrey Delavale is an English soldier, wounded in battle in the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. He is nonetheless sympathetic to the Jacobites because of the savage treatment the Duke of Cumberland is meting out to the rebels and their innocent families. Masquerading as an invalid and settled onto a Scottish household, he sneaks out at night to rescue rebels and take them to safety. As an English traitor, he is pursued by British troops; as the owner of an estate his uncle has laid claim to, he is pursued by his uncle's hired killers. He and Prudence, daughter of the Scots household, endeavour to escape the killers and deliver a Jacobite cipher.
