Abstract:

Surveys the history of Jewish life in the district of Rhein-Hunsrück between the medieval period and World War II, focusing on Jewish tradition, trade, synagogues, and cemeteries. Pp. 119-307 trace the history of ten Jewish communities in the district: Boppard (Holzfeld), Oberwesel, St. Goar/Werlau/Hirzenach, Kirchberg, Simmern, Gemuenden, Laufersweiler, Rheinböllen, Sohren, and Kastellaun. In 1933, 92 Jews lived in Boppard; 70 were murdered during the Holocaust. In Oberwesel there were 47 Jews in 1925; 30 became victims of the Holocaust. In St. Goar, Werlau, and Hirzenach 48 Jews were murdered during the war. In 1933, 67 Jews lived in Kirchberg; 45 became victims of the Holocaust. In Simmern 32 were killed, in Gemünden 22, in Laufersweiler 24, in Rheinböllen 17, in Sohren 12, and in Kastellaun 25. Includes alphabetical lists of the victims.
