Abstract:

Surveys the life of Jews in Trutnov, a locality in Czechoslovakia near the German border. Though individual Jews lived there from the 16th century, a Jewish community was founded only in the 1860s. The ca. 350 Jews between 1880-1930 made up about 2.5% of the population. With the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany, some German Jews emigrated to Czechoslovakia. After the occupation, Jews were persecuted; during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, many Jews were sent to the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen. Relates the fate of Jewish families who tried to escape the Nazi terror. Of 369 Jews who lived in Trutnov in 1930, about 150 emigrated and 97 were murdered during the Holocaust or committed suicide. The fate of the remaining 125 Jews is unknown.
