Abstract:
Catholic antisemitism spread in France after the publication of Drumont's "La France juive" (1886) and of the antisemitic journal "La Libre Parole" from 1892, which he edited. Towards the end of the 19th century, numerous nationalist, anti-Masonic and antisemitic leagues were established. Surveys the publications, organizations, and leaders, dealing with their anti-Dreyfusard views. The most important Catholic antisemitic and anti-Dreyfusard movement was Charles Maurras' Action Française, which continued its activities into the interwar period, promoting political antisemitism. Relates, also, to the group of Christian Dreyfusards led by Charles Péguy. During the period of World War II, many French Catholics were fascinated by the personality of Pétain. The "Statute of the Jews" of 1941 did not provoke any official reaction from Catholic authorities. Catholic resistance during the war was centered in Lyon, where "L'Amitié chrétienne", an organization which helped persecuted Jews, was founded. Relating to the postwar period, discusses the beginnings of Christian-Jewish dialogue, the activities and writings of Jules Isaac, the founding in 1948 of "Amitié judéo-chrétienne", and other initiatives which led eventually to the "Nostra aetate" declaration. The last chapter presents people and organizations involved in Christian-Jewish dialogue in the post-Vatican II period.
