Résumé:

A history of the Jews of Bordeaux, who arrived in the city at the end of the first century. From 1154, Bordeaux came under the control of the English crown which lasted for three centuries. In regard to antisemitism, notes that in 1222 the wearing of a yellow Jewish star became mandatory. In 1287, King Edward I began to expel the Jews from Bordeaux and Gascogne, liquidating their property for his own benefit. In 1313, Edward II continued the expulsions, but it is not clear exactly when the community disappeared from the city. Only in 1550 did Jews return, when some Conversos, fleeing the Inquisition in Portugal, were offered refuge. However, more than 150 years passed before these Conversos could openly profess their Jewish faith. By the 18th century, the Jews, comprising a few thousand of Bordeaux's 10,000 inhabitants, were well integrated. Pp. 285-318 deal with Bordeaux during the Holocaust period. The long period of Jewish integration came to an end in 1943 with the arrest of the chief rabbi and the roundups of local Jews between 1943-44. In 1940, 1,500 Jewish families lived in Bordeaux. The number of Jews in 2003 was a few thousand.
