Abstract:

"On the hot, dusty streets of Delhi, Tibetan refugees desperate to attract attention to their cause go on hunger strike. After 49 days the Tibetans are at death's door as the Indian riot police arrive to stop the strike. From the madness a human flame emerges. Devout Buddhist, Thubten Ngodup has doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire. Gaynor O'Flynn is the sole westerner to witness the self-immolation. This horrific act has haunted her ever since. The film follows Gaynor on a return visit to India, as she tries to lay this ghost to rest. She undertakes a journey through the Himalayas to the remote Spiti Valley where the Dalai Lama will be performing the ancient Kalachakra ceremony, designed to guide participants to Shambhala, Heaven right here on Earth. As she travels through lush valleys and across spectacular mountain passes she meets other western spiritual seekers, Tibetan refugees, hippies, monks, tribes people and local sages, all in search of the elusive peace of mind that is Shambhala. Through the eyes of a spiritual tourist the ancient teachings are given a modern and radical slant."
