Abstract:

This unusual concerto for one hand was composed by Ravel, commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm during WWI. A critic wrote that the solo part sounded as if it was performed by two, sometimes four hands, showing Ravel's ability to make limitation a source for creativity. This poetic concert performed by the French virtuoso Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and French conductor François-Xavier Roth also presents influences from George Gershwin, Stravinsky and Basque folk music. An interview of the pianist is available.
