Contents: Part I. Poverty is on the run. Liberalism liberated ; It's the end of the world as they knew it, and you should feel pretty good ; Nostalgia and pessimism worsen poverty ; Under liberalism the formerly poor can flourish ethically and spiritually ; Consider the possibility that your doubts might be mistaken ; Pessimism has been since 1800 a rotten predictor ; Even about the environment ; In fact, none of the sevel old pessimism makes a lot of sense ; Nor do the three new ones ; So to get better, the world had better keep its ethical wits about it ; And true liberalism celebrates a life beyond wealth --
Part II. Enrichment didn't come for the reasons you imagine. Liberal ideas, not European horrors or heroism, explain the great enrichment ; Liberalism supported innovism and the profit test ; The great enrichment did not come from resources or railways or property rights ; Nor thrift or "capitalism" ; Schooling and science were not the fairy dust ; It wasn't imperialism ; Nor slavery ; Nor wage slavery ended by unions and regulation --
Part III. It came because ideas, ethics, rhetoric, and ideology changed. The talk and the deals changed in northwestern Europe ; That is, ethics and rhetoric changed ; "Honest" shows the change ; And "happiness" itself changed ; The change in valuation showed in English plays, poems, and novels --
Part IV. The causes of the causes were not racial or ancient. Happy accidents led to the revaluation ; And then old Adam Smith revealed / the virtues of the bourgeois deal.

Abstract:

"Deirdre McCloskey is one of our best-known economic historians and an advocate for free market capitalism and the power of ideas in shaping our economy. Leave Me Alone and I'll Make You Rich collects the provocative arguments put forward by McCloskey in a trilogy published by the Press that mounts a vigorous defense of capitalism as told through the story of the rise of the bourgeois. Co-authored with Art Carden, Leave Me Alone and I'll Make You Rich is a libertarian take on economic development and the role of government and, indeed, tells a different story of market expansion and democratization than that of Thomas Piketty or Joseph Stiglitz. Carden and McCloskey succinctly demonstrate the power of new technologies and new ideas about democracy, liberty, and dignity for all people in fueling economic growth and prosperity in modernizing Europe"--
