Abstract:

Memorandum (Nov. 6, 1784) to Sir John Johnson and letter (Oct. 3, 1797) to Thomas Morris, concerning post-war Iroquois relations with the British and the Treaty of Big Tree between the Seneca and the United States government.

In 1784, Brant requested Johnson's assistance in determining if the British government would support the Five Nations in a war with the Americans and indemnify them for losses incurred during the late conflict. Following the Sept., 1797, negotiation of the treaty of Big Tree, Brant congratulated Morris on the agreement, which enabled him, acting as legal representative for his financially-troubled land speculator father, Robert Morris, to buy up the Seneca title to western Genesee lands. Apparently Brant had been cultivated, as well as paid, by the Morris family to exercise his influence on their behalf with the Senecas.
