Abstract:

April 27, 1770 letter from Benjamin Roberts in London to Sir William Johnson, superintendent of Indian affairs, regarding the reaction in the House of Commons to the Boston Massacre and his meeting with Lord Hillsborough (secretary of state for the colonies).

Roberts reports that although he explained to Hillsborough that no Indian Dept. officials at the upper posts (commissary positions had been eliminated in 1769) meant increased food and clothing expenses for Johnson, Hillsborough refused to consider a request for additional funds that was not submitted through proper channels. Roberts also comments on his own attempts to secure a new position.
