Abstract:

The collection comprises 6 letters, all in photographic copies, pasted in an album. Five letters from 1768 to 1791 were copied from Edmund Burke's archive in Sheffield, England (11 photos). One letter from 1776 is addressed to the Director of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. These 2 photos, loosely inserted, have the Uffizi archives stamp on the verso.

One letter from Burke's archive was sent from Paris, during Reynold's trip to France (1768 Sept. 9 to Oct. 23). He criticizes the erroneous descriptions of the French, "fabricated" by English travel writers. In a letter from 1784 Aug. 24 Reynolds informs Burke that he has been appointed the King's principal painter. A letter from 1784 Dec. 18 is about the funeral of their friend, Samuel Johnson. On 1789 July 25, the artist invites Burke to join him and some friends for lunch. Another letter describes the preparations for the erection of an obelisk on Burke's country property by the architect Joseph Bonomi. Reynolds reports in a postscript the rumor that the Chancellor will approve a peerage and pension for Burke (1791 Jan. 25).

The letter at the Uffizi was written in Italian from London in 1776. Reynolds thanks the director of the Gallery for the medals awarded him by the Grand Duke of Tuscany [after Reynolds had donated a self-portrait to the Uffizi Gallery that year].
