Abstract:
Several of the letters were sent from the town hall in Manchester, where Brown was fulfilling a commission to paint scenes illustrating the history of the city. In a letter to Shields (1884), Brown writes that because of his dislike of the ventilation in the building and the difficulty of painting from models directly onto wall panels, he intends to paint his "Wyclif" in oils in his studio. A second letter to Shields (1887) concerns the reception of Brown's work in Manchester. Here, Brown gives detailed information on his circle both in that city and in London, and touches upon his conflict with the administration of the Royal Academy. Included in the collection is a 4 p. letter to Charles Rowley (1882) concerning a lecture Brown is preparing on the benefits of beautifying the environs of Manchester. Brown advocates the use of whitewash and thatch, tasteful coloring, and general tidiness, which he considers to be "one of the holiest of aesthetics" and a duty to the community rather than a selfish vanity.
