Abstract:

Outgoing correspondence of Thomas Gage to Sir William Johnson, British superintendent of Indian affairs, between 1766 and 1771.

Small collection containing three letters by Gage as well as extracts of correspondence from Lieut.-Colonel Campbell, commanding officer at Fort Detroit reporting to Gage on Indian relations. The correspondence includes information on the following topics: maintaining peace with the Indians near the frontier posts of Detroit, St. Joseph, and Michilimackinac, Mich., ill-treatment of the Indians, and rumors of war with Spain. There is also mention of financial payments of Indian trader George Croghan.
