Abstract:

Publications by Sir Patrick Geddes consist almost entirely of reprint articles from professional journals and pamphlets concerning his views on universities in Europe and in India; nature study and geographical education, ancient and modern graphic methods, cooperation versus socialism, classification of statistics, and sociology in relation to economics. Copies of printed speeches, papers, and lectures pertaining to the principles of economics, zoology, the origin of inland towns and cities, and scientific industries in Edinburgh. Syllabi of courses taught by Geddes at St. Andrews University on the natural history of plants, and an introduction to the study of civics at the University of London; catalogs of the Scots College at the University of Montpelier, established by Geddes, and the Edinburgh School of Sociology of which he was president. There are also reports on paleontological and zoological research in Mexico (1879), the proposed St. Louis international assembly (1903), city development in Dunfermline, Scotland for the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust (1904), an annotated town plan report on India, and the resources of technical education. Guidebooks, outline catalogs, and photographs of cities exhibitions (1911, 1922-23); handwritten notes, and a biography of John Ruskin written by Geddes. There is a partial listing of his scientific works (1900-1927), and a register of his papers published by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Strathclyde.

Correspondents include Fraser Davies, Lewis Mumford, and John Ross. The collection also contains publications by Victor V. Branford, a banker, lecturer, and intimate associate of Geddes. Reprint articles from the SOCIOLOGICAL REVIEW and other journals in the social sciences concerning art and education, politics and civics, and the organization of economic and political studies in American universities. Copies of the pamphlet series "Papers for the Present," issued or published for the Cities Committee of the Sociological Society organized by Branford and Geddes; lecture syllabi on the study of social science, and the history and principles of the social sciences.
