Abstract:

The Library of Living Philosophers papers document the editorial history of the Library under the editorship of founder-editor, Paul Arthur Schilpp, for the period 1938 to 1981. The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, financial and business records, records relating to funding, printed and promotional material, and miscellaneous correspondence and records relating to the Library's editorial board. The correspondence makes up a major portion of the collection, and most of it is between Schilpp and contributors to each volume; between Schilpp and the philosophers to whose work the volumes are devoted; and between Schilpp and publishers, both national and international. Notable correspondents include philosophers, and literary and political personalities such as John Dewey, Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, Benedetto Croce, William Ernest Hacking, Charles Hartshorne, Oreste Pucciani, Iris Murdoch, Ernst Nagel, and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
