Abstract:

A brief biography of the German Jewish writer (1884-1958), surveying his literary work between 1901-57. Emphasizes his opposition to nationalism and antisemitism; in 1933 his writings appeared on the "brown list of detestable literature" and were burned, his home and property were confiscated, his academic title was revoked, and he emigrated with his wife to the south of France. Feuchtwanger's literary reaction to the advent of the Nazi state was expressed in his novel "Die Geschwister Oppermann" (1933), in which he relates the fate of a Jewish family in Berlin between November 1932-August 1933. His own persecution - first in Germany, then internment in Les Milles in 1939 and again in 1940, and his flight over the Pyrenees in 1940 to Spain, Portugal, and finally the USA - and the gradual deterioration of the situation of the Jews in Germany, forced Feuchtwanger to revise his attitude toward Judaism. Whereas he had previously criticized the idea of Zionism, in 1940 he called for the establishment of a Jewish state.
