Abstract:

"This is the first comprehensive study of the work of Lon Fuller (1902-1978), one of the most important legal philosophers of the twentieth century. The leading standard-bearer of secular natural law, he was also one of the greatest proceduralists in the history of legal history of legal theory, the leading American critic of legal positivism, and the founder of a whole new branch of jurisprudence devoted to the nature and limits of basic legal processes. Fuller was also a distinguished theorist of contract law, and his writings and teaching materials on the subject have been very influential and widely used. After a brief biography of Fuller, the author examines Fuller's writings on law and morals, natural law, basic legal processes such as legislation and adjudication, legal method, contract jurisprudence, and legal education. Throughout, the author provides explanations of Fuller's more difficult theories, and traces the leading influences on his thought" -- Backcover.
