Abstract:

The diary of a Pole, a teacher, who during the Nazi occupation of Rzeszów was the director of a museum in which many Jews who lived in the ghetto worked. Kotula, who noted every event in the town in his "Dziennik okupacyjny" ("Diary of the Occupation"), realized very quickly that the Jews were being treated differently by the Nazis and began to write a separate chronicle about the fate of the Jews. He noted everything that was told to him about life in the ghetto by the Jews working in the museum, and what he and others witnessed. He mentions measures against the Jews and Jewish reactions to them, including the founding of the ghetto, its liquidation in December 1941, and terrorization from the beginning of 1942. Traces the figure of Heinz Ehaus, Kreishauptmann in Rzeszów up to June 1942, and describes his role in the violence against the Jews. After the war Kotula revised the text and added various comments.
