Abstract:

"The Maketu cemetery is a small Roman Catholic cemetery in the south Auckland District of Franklin. Maketu settlement no longer exists, but the cemetery is near to modern Ramarama. Maketu was settled under the Special Waikato Immigration scheme in 1865 as a result of the Waikato war and the land confiscations that followed. The cemetery was established in the early 1870's on raupatu (confiscated land) and as such has deep significance for Tangata Whenua. The cemetery came the burial place for many of the first and second generation of Roman Catholic Irish who made Maketu their home. [It] is also still used as a burial place for their decendants--. The primary aim of this project is to research and define-- [the] historical and cultural significance of the cemetery. A secondary aim is to explore the processes and policies that may best preserve the identified cultural heritage values of the cemetery."--P. 2-3.
